Concerns about falling water levels in about half of Randall County and all of Swisher County have spurred moves toward elections to become part of a water conservation district. The High Pains Underground Water Conservation District No. 1 will conduct a public meeting for information and comment at 7 p.m. , July 15 at the Cole Community Center, 300 16th St. in Canyon.
Many of our neighbors, especially in the area around South Washington St., have had to lower their water pumps to reach water. "Some of the people live near (irrigation) center pivots, and when they turn on the pumps to water corn, it drops the water pretty significantly."
"Water conservation districts regulate water use in different ways. High Plains uses well spacing requirements as one tool to balance water use."
